What is a hair structure and hair types?
Almost the entire surface of the body is covered with hair, with the exception of some areas such as palms, soles, mucous membranes of the lips and external genitalia. Most of these are small, colorless hairs. Hairs that are located in areas such as the scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes are thicker, longer and are called terminal hairs. Humans have about 5 million hair follicles, 100,000 of which are located on the scalp. The hair consists of 95% keratin, a fibrous, coiled protein (helix shape) that is part of the skin and all hair extensions (body hair, nails, etc.). Keratin is synthesized by keratinocytes and is insoluble in water, sealing and protecting the hair. Hair consists of two different structures. These are the follicle and the hair shaft. The follicle is the living part under the skin and the hair shaft is the completely lifeless part above the skin surface. The structure of the hair can be divided into 3 separate parts:
- Medulla: It is the innermost layer of the hair shaft, which consists of an amorphous, soft, oily substance.
- Cuticle: it is the thin protective outer layer that contains the nourishing part necessary for hair growth. It is highly keratinized and consists of layered, flake-shaped cells about 60 micrometers long and about 6 micrometers wide.
- Cortex: It is the main component of the hair that contains long keratin chains that give the hair flexibility and resistance. The cells of the cortex are connected by a lipid- and protein-rich intercellular cement. Each cell consists of bundles that run in the direction of the hair length
How many hours does a hair transplant take and is it comfortable?
